New North Olympic Peninsula residents can pick up gardening tips from Master Gardeners at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Registration is required by today.

Master Gardeners Larry Roth and Margery Whites will lead the workshop at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden, 2711 Woodcock Road.

The event is free. To reserve a spot, call 360-565-2679.

New residents to the area might face gardening and landscaping challenges in the unique climate of the Pacific Northwest, as Roth and Whites did when they moved to the area two years ago.

The two Master Gardeners will discuss how to choose appropriate plants for a homeowner’s property based on his or her specific microclimate.

Basic landscape planning designed to help homeowners grow and maintain a sustainable garden will then be reviewed.

In the third section of the workshop, Roth and Whites will help attendees develop problem-solving techniques for specific challenges that might occur during the region’s wet winters and dry summer months.

Finally, Roth and Whites will offer tools to find appropriate information and resources for additional gardening information.

Each section will begin with a lecture, after which small discussions will be held.

Roth and Whites are both retired professors from St. Cloud State in Minnesota.
